Blepharoplasty

Norwich Cosmetic Clinic are specialists in Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty). Excess upper and lower eye bag removal. During surgery the upper lids are sealed with special tissue glue that allows for an excellent and aesthetically pleasing scar, and stitches do not need to be removed post operatively.

Eyelid reduction ("blepharoplasty") is a delicate operation to remove the excess damaged skin and unsightly bulging fat around the eyes so to create a more radiant and youthful appearance. It can improve the visual field. The operation can be performed for the upper and lower eyelids.

Standard Blepharoplasty

During the operation our surgeon will make cuts around the natural lines of your eyelid and remove the excess damaged skin and sculpt the fat pad of the eyelid. Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anaesthesia. However, most lower eyelid blepharoplasties and combined upper and lower lid blepharoplasty are performed under general anaesthesia.

Extended Blepharoplasty

During standard eyelid operations, other necessary adjustments might be made such as: internal lifting of the eyebrow, upper part of the cheek and lifting of the corners of the eyelid with or without tightening them. Naturally this operation is more extensive and time consuming. The cosmetic result is superior.

Other surgical procedures (eyelid and facial)

  • Ptosis, drooping upper lids due to muscle weakness
  • Gold weight implants - for facial nerve weakness & inability to close the eye
  • Tightening of droopy lower lids
  • Excision of lid cancer and reconstruction together with full thickness skin graft
  • Excision of moles, warts, cysts and other lesions of the face

Eyes can indicate age more than any other part of the face. They also show our emotion and we use them to communicate with others. So eyelid surgery can have amazing effects on your overall performance. The process of blepharoplasty removes some of the excess skin and tissue to tighten the area around the eye and create a fresher, more youthful look.

During the procedure you consultant surgeon will create small incisions in the natural folds of the upper eyelid, and just below the lashes on the lower. Excess skin and tissue can then be removed, and the area will be closed with very fine stitching. The fine stitches aim to minimise scarring, but fine lines will be expected at first, though they will fade significantly in time.

Blepharoplasty can be performed under local anaesthetic, though a general anaesthetic can sometimes be more suitable. You will usually stay in hospital overnight, but you should arrange to be off work for a week to allow the area to heal. Strenuous activity or sport should be avoided for at least six weeks.

Some tenderness and minor swelling can be expected but will reduce rapidly and can be eased with painkillers.

The potential risks with this procedure are minimal however any risks will be fully explained to you by your consultant surgeon at your initial consultation.

It is advisable to seek the advice of your GP or other independent medical practitioner before proceeding with surgery.
